Susannah Breslin has a Forbes column "Pink Slipped".
The column is a good read, well written, and the viewpoint is usually one of objective observer.
There are always a few choice nuggets in her columns.
In her recent column about women at a tech conference she ran into someone named Nate St. Pierre who runs a charity named "Love Drops", after attending panels of people focused on getting associated with major brands.
"I think for the most part women shouldn’t go to technology conferences, but maybe they should because there is always that one fleeting moment amidst all the bullshit when you realize maybe there is more to this world than getting sponsored by a soda."

How Accurate is Politifact
Here is the story:
Janice Hahn gets double slammed on her ‘gang intervention’ debacle
Here is Politifact:
Video accuses Janice Hahn of hiring gang members
The money quote from Politifact:
"The issue, though, is whether Hahn hired these gang-intervention specialists with taxpayer money and even helped get some of them out of jail."
P. J. Steve (a gang member) on video said that Janice Hahn got him out on his own recognizance (OR). An angry city attorney said "I was told Hahn's office called and said PJ Steve worked for her, and because he was a gang intervention worker they asked for an O.R. release. And it was granted."
I would have to say (given the preponderance of evidence) that "helped get them out of jail" is probably true.
Let's look at the "hired these gang-intervention specialists with taxpayer money" part of the question. The Fox report didn't actually claim that the gangsters were getting tax payer funds - they just raised the question.
So, Politifact took a accusation and a straw man, put them together and said it was false.
The truth is kind of in the middle. She clearly helped at least one gangster get out on OR. Fox never claimed she was paying gangsters with government money and while it's possible, there isn't sufficient proof at this point to say that they are being paid with public funds.
It would be nice to see an audit of LA's books to see where some of the money went but that is above my pay grade.
I would give Politifact a grade of C.

Let's look at the "hired these gang-intervention specialists with taxpayer money" part of the question. The Fox report didn't actually claim that the gangsters were getting tax payer funds - they just raised the question.
- Fox gave an example of a gangster named "Weasel" who apparently sucked up 1 million in city funds. However it wasn't clear to me what if any relationship he had to Janice Hahn. This is however a dumb use of city funds.
- Fox gave numerous examples of Hahn related gangsters who claimed to be "Gang Int" (Gang Interventionists) and claimed to be paid by agencies such as Unity One.
- Unity One receives funding from Toberman Settlement House which primarily a non-profit charity but probably receives government funding for its social work.
- The funding of Amer-i-can (a James Brown charity) which apparently hired some gangsters is uncertain.
So, Politifact took a accusation and a straw man, put them together and said it was false.

More bad math
Mistaking Numerology for Math
The above article refers to a quote in Nature Science Magazine: 1,211,287 Square kilometers of ice road-accessible Arctic lands that will be unreachable by 2050, a 14% decrease, according to a report online 29 May in Nature Climate Change.
The problem is if you look at current estimates of ice-road accessible land, they are only accurate to 2 or 3 digits. So this number should be 1,200,000 sq. km.
This same data was reported in May as "50000 square miles" from the US and "400000 square kilometers from Canada (single digit accuracy)"
Let's commit some math here: 50000x(1.609344)2 = 130,000 sq. km.
So about 530,000 sq. km. is lost from North America, presumably the majority of the rest is lost from Russia.
1,211,287 was not calculated by anyone aware of the accuracy of the numbers they are pushing. Further (as the above article makes clear in the comments) the 14% loss figure means the actual number is 1,200,000 (two digit accuracy).
Further, this ranks up there with the prediction the arctic will be ice free by 2012,2014, 2015, 2040, etc. (the 2012, and 2014 are from Nature.com - the source of the ice road prediction, 2015 is from David Barber of the University of Manitoba).
I predict that in 2015 the ice extent will be greater than 2007 (the minimum) . This would make these ice predictions off by more than 100%.
If your predictions are off by 100% a 7-digit accurate prediction is worse than a joke.

The dance of the low-sloping foreheads...
This from Ed Driscoll via Instapundit:
The View Of The World From Pinch Avenue.
The money quote from a video:
“If it’s Kansas, Missouri, no big deal. You know, that’s the dance of the low-sloping foreheads. The middle places, right? …Did I just say that aloud?”
Having lived in the Midwest - Midwesterners are more team oriented than people on the east coast. New Jersey is more team oriented than either New York or DC. New York has too much empire building (everyone is too interested in getting their cut and protecting their turf).
DC is more political. In places it is worse than New York (the Federal Government in particular is just a turf war), in some commercial areas it looks like a Southern state and people are better behaved.
I don't understand the hubris of people on the coast. If you can't play well as a team your value to society is limited.

Those Fighting Wisconsinites
In allegation of Supreme Court scuffle, Wisconsin politics hits new low
How stupid/evil was Bill Lueders's attack on Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser?
Well, some background is needed. Wisconsin has some great college hockey teams. From peewee to collegiate level they do a greatly job of developing new players. Because this is Wisconsin the participants are subject to hockey rules.
Now back to the story:
This Lueders character published a story about a confrontation in Supreme Court Justice Ann Walsh Bradley. He talked to three people so he must have had the whole story and instead published a one-sided piece defaming Supreme Court Justice David Prosser.
Since a Supreme Court Justice plays a referee role, this is "defaming the ref" and is a minimum of a 10 minute misconduct or a possibly a game misconduct.
Supreme Court Justice Ann Walsh Bradley charged Supreme Court Justice David Prosser with her fists raised. Since this was peer on peer, we will treat them as "players" from a rule standpoint. Charging is normally a minor infraction but, "The infraction may warrant any severity of penalty or combination of penalties as the officials deem fit, including a major plus a game misconduct...". Since Bradley was the aggressor she receives at least a minor for "charging". She also gets a minor for "roughing" or a major (a five minute penalty) for fighting depending on whether her gloves were off. If there was an injury (which is not alleged) - she would deserve a major plus a game misconduct.
I suggest these penalties be enforced immediately.

About accuracy
One thing that gets beat into engineers is that you are only as accurate as your least accurate number.
If you see a calculation:
2.2 * 2349014 * 2033 = ?
The incorrect answer is 10506200016.
The correct answer is 11x109.
The answer is only good to 2 significant figures.
(an argument could be made that 10.5 x109 is acceptable).

Where does the heat go
The Volume of Earth’s Ocean has an effective depth of 3700 meters (the actual depth is slightly less but there is a 2% compression).
The ocean area is 361 million km2. The ocean volume is 1.31 billion km3. Total land area is 149 million km2.
The atmosphere is about 100 km thick. The actual mass of air above the earth per square inch is about 15 lbs (101568.6 or about 102 thousand n/m2 which is what dividing mass by surface area gives you.)
Density is 1.2 to 1.2250 (1.2) kg·m−3 (or 1.21x10−6 kg·cm−3 ). Conversion to metric of psi (in this case) is 2.2/(2.542).
Heat Capacity:
Air = 0.0013 J·cm−3·K−1
Land = 1.0 J·cm−3·K−1
Ocean = 4.2 J·cm−3·K−1
Lets commit some math.
Air volume = (15*/2.2*1.21*2.542)/1.21x10−6 = 873405 cm3
Air heat capacity =873405 * 0.0013 = 1135.43 = 1100 J·K−1
Land equivalent = 1100 cm3
Ocean equivalent = 1135.43/4.2 = 270.34 = 270 cm3.
Because all the above math is for a 1cm x 1 cm square of the earths surface:
The top 36 ft (11 m) of dirt has more heat capacity than the atmosphere above it.
The top 8.8 ft (2.7 m) of ocean has more heat capacity than all the air above it.
As a side note - if the whole atmosphere was at the sea level density - the atmosphere would end just above the top of Mt. Everest (around 27,000 ft).
Relative capacity of ocean = 3700*100(m to cm conversion)/270 = 1370. The ocean holds 1370 times the heat of the atmosphere immediately about it.
The quoted heat capacity of the ocean is said to be "about 1000 times the heat capacity of the air". If you divide the ocean capacity by the entire atmosphere that is approximately true.
This begs the following questions:
a. How long after a change in solar energy does the earth reach equilibrium?
b. Why are we measuring ocean surface and air temperatures to find out if the earth is warming or cooling?

Natural Gas Subsidies.
Courtesy of Instapundit:
T. BOONE PICKENS: “I bought this bill!”
I have lot of respect for Mr. Pickens. He built Mesa Petroleum into one of the largest independent energy producers. Mr. Pickens has obviously been a successful entrepreneur in the energy field. He's so right that we should be energy independent that it hurts. It shows political savvy that he invested in politicians and ads so that he could get energy subsidies passed that would greatly increase the value of his investments.
At that point we part company:
Further, per cubic foot propane (LPG) has 2.5 the energy density of methane (natural gas). LPG is stored at 100 to 200 psi in liquid form. Natural gas doesn't liquify at room temperature, it is normal stored as CNG (compressed natural gas) by compressing it to 2900–3600 psi. ANG (Adsorbed Natural Gas) tank technology can store natural gas at 500 psi but the tank will be much slower to refill than an LPG tank, filling isn't as safe, and the tank will be heavier than an LPG tank. 150 psi is better than 500 psi.
It troubles me that some buses are probably using CNG at 3600 psi - that's a flammable gas stored at more pressure than a scuba tank. This is essentially an unexploded IED.

At that point we part company:
- Politicians should not be for sale.
- Energy subsides, in a crashed economy, for a product that if we simply permitted the known reserves to be pumped out of the ground - using fracking and other new technologies - would sell at half its current price, borders on crazy. I will allow, that it doesn't approach the stupidity of ethanol subsidies (in the midst of a starving world we are burning food as fuel???) If Mr. Pickens had advocated reducing regulatory impediments to production, improving the pipeline infrastructure, and funding research into maximizing the yield of of our oil/gas fields instead, we would be in lockstep. If we can make natural gas cheap enough it will be used for vehicles and power generation - no subsidy needed.
- LPG (propane) is a better vehicle fuel than natural gas.

Kaus Files
I have serious viewpoint differences with Mickey Kaus. However he is insightful and concise, which makes for a good read.
California would have been well served to elect Mr. Kaus instead of Barbara Boxer.

Music to sooth the savage beasts...
The last post reminded me of another noble experiment in science:
Mozart or Rock?
The story is fairly simple:
David Merrell, a 16-year-old Nansemond River High School student
Three groups of rats.
One maze.
Mozart.
Rock.
Initially all groups of rats ran the maze with an average time of 10 minutes. One group was then treated to 10 hours of silence each day. One group was treated to 10 hours of Mozart each day. One group received 10 hours of rock music (presumably heavy metal).
After 4 months the control rats (no music) took 5 minutes to run the maze. The classical rats took 1.5 minutes to run the maze. The rock rats took 30 minutes to complete the maze.
The poor showing by the rock rats isn't the bad part of the story.
He kept all the animals confined individually. This is because the previous year he ran the same experiment, but kept each group together. After about month the rock rats became erratic and started to become cannibalistic. The lack of a "rock rat" test group terminated the experiment.

Can Humans Sense Earth's Magnetism? Sure they can!
Saw this article in Science Daily:
Can Humans Sense Earth's Magnetism?
I was surprised - I thought this was proven years ago. As I remember the facts:
The University of Minnesota tested a group of men and women (apparently out in the woods since they were away from magnetic influences).
Each volunteer was blindfolded, spun around, and asked to point north.
80% of men could point north consistently.
20% of men and all the women had no sense of direction.
They then attached magnets to the volunteers heads and repeated the experiment.
No one pointed north accurately.
If you have the link to the actual study, please send it.
The Minnesota study was about 30 years ago.
I did find this:
Gender Research: Exploring the Differences Between Men and Women
which is pretty much the same story.

Precious Treasure and the pepper.
My daughter "Precious Treasure" toddled into the living room today and showed me a pepper she had bought, "it looks like a pumpkin!"
It was a red pepper that was orange, appeared to have eight sides and looked exactly like pumpkin.

What to do about Weiner
I've been following the Anthony Weiner debacle out of technical interest.
Right now it looks like he is going to end up resigning (my estimate is 80% chance).
I have been looking for good timelines of what happened and they are all fundamentally incomplete.
A Timeline of Weiner's Sexting Scandal
His original reaction was to say he was hacked. To technical people this looked very dubious. There are at least two ways to forge a twitter message from his account but the most obvious one would have required a current or former staffer to be the source. Which would make the email a prank (malicious or not). If his account had been actually hacked (someone had gained control of his account) that would not be something he could undo in 4 minutes.
But let's assume that he was right. What would an actually wronged congressman do? He would contact the FBI, who would have a fairly easy time finding who was fault.
What did Anthony Weiner do: the day of the underwear twitter message almost all the photos were stripped from Weiner's accounts, some tweets were deleted, the target of the email had her online presence erased, and a lawyer was contacted.
A good analogy is the case where someone claims they had a break-in at their home. Instead of contacting the sheriff, they burn down their home and contact a lawyer.
I'm going to assume (for argument) that Weiner made a simple mistake and sent a photo link when he didn't mean to. What he should have done is delete the tweet then, when confronted, said something to the effect: "I sent a photo link by mistake. This carelessness act reflects badly on my constituents and my wife. I apologize to them and will try in the future to be the exemplary example that they deserve. "
If that had been his reaction, there would have been no story (he'd been single a long time and probably hadn't thought through how some of his e-communications would look to other people.)
Instead his original suspicious actions were followed by a week of clearly incorrect statements including "he can’t say 'with certitude' whether or not a lewd below-the-belt photo depicted his body" which just encouraged a lot of digging:
Anthony Weiner Scandal: A Timeline of Deceit - ABC News
A WEINERGATE stalemate?
LAWS ARE FOR THE LITTLE PEOPLE
At this point enough dirt has been dug up on Weiner that, on top of a week of dissembling, it doesn't appear that he could be able to effectively represent his voters. The public trust is a requirement for a successful politician. Weiner doesn't appear to have that anymore.
I feel sorry for Weiner. If he had been honest up-front ...
