Music to sooth the savage beasts...

The last post reminded me of another noble experiment in science:
Mozart or Rock?

The story is fairly simple:
David Merrell, a 16-year-old Nansemond River High School student
Three groups of rats.
One maze.
Mozart.
Rock.

Initially all groups of rats ran the maze with an average time of 10 minutes. One group was then treated to 10 hours of silence each day. One group was treated to 10 hours of Mozart each day. One group received 10 hours of rock music (presumably heavy metal).

After 4 months the control rats (no music) took 5 minutes to run the maze. The classical rats took 1.5 minutes to run the maze. The rock rats took 30 minutes to complete the maze.

The poor showing by the rock rats isn't the bad part of the story.

He kept all the animals confined individually. This is because the previous year he ran the same experiment, but kept each group together. After about month the rock rats became erratic and started to become cannibalistic. The lack of a "rock rat" test group terminated the experiment.
